The next and coming week on Friday, July 19, singles rookie-sensation Paul Oyama is going to face a competitor that is an absolute legend in the Schmoedown League, “Dangerous” Dan Murrell, whom recently defended the belt towards William Bibbiani three months ago in April.
Ever since his first match, Oyama’s down-to-earth personality brought some of the greatest knowledge of movies to the Schmoedown in a very long time. He knows pretty much every category in the book including classics from Hollywood’s golden age and the names of directors. His record has four wins and no defeats. It looks like he is going to be the new singles champion.
Here’s why.
From my perspective, he is this generation’s Dan Murrell. He is very cool and focused when playing the game and clearly has fun and enjoyment out of it. Oyama takes time to answer and uses his repeats wisely enough. He might know more than Murrell, John Rocha, and especially Mark Reilly with very deep categories like Famous Actors & Actresses, Movie Release Dates, and pre-1980’s knowledge.
There might be a very good chance this week that he might replace Tom Dagnino as becoming one of the members of “The Five Horsemen”, which is the team super group involving Murrell, Rocha, Reilly, and Ben Bateman. The reason being is because the group represents the true aspect of the Schmoedown playing ability; respect. There was one post-credit scene after a match when John Rocha and Tom Dagnino had an emotional conversation.
That sort of hints something there.
Then again, that’s just a slight prediction from me personally.
Oyama first debuted in the Schmoedown Fan Leagues joining along with now rookie-sensations like Innergeekdom’s Kevin Smets. Kristian Harloff even said in an Inside Schmoedown talk-show episode where he predicted that Oyama might be a future champion.
I was jumping under my skin when he answered the director’s name Billy Wilder of the ’50’s romantic classic “Sabrina”. He clearly answered every single question in the New Releases category. Paul Oyama has absolutely no fear when given a category from Ken Napzok, Kristian Harloff or Mark Ellis. You can clearly tell that there is no weakness in Oyama.
Be aware that Oyama might have missed out on questions in the past. During this week when Oyama and former World’s Finest team member Eric Zipper teamed up as the Loose Cannons making their debut. Oyama kind of stumbled in the Clint Eastwood category when given some deep cuts from his western films. He got threw off at certain times.
During his match with Chance Ellison, he missed out a question of one of my all-time favorite movies “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” where the mental patients watched the world series. He hesitated on the question for a bit while I knew it right by a millisecond when watching the match.
That comes to show that not everyone is perfect in Movie Trivia. Dan Murrell didn’t even know who directed “The ‘Burbs” and the Tom Hardy thriller “Child 44” where he lost the matches. This doesn’t mean that he is still considered to be the greatest Schmoedown competitor of all time.
Another mind-blowing aspect about Oyama is that he is probably one of the youngest competitors in the Movie Trivia Schmoedown with his age being 22 years old. Oyama even told in a Schmoedown Rundown interview with Brad Gilmore and Frank Janisch that his family grew up with movies, where comes why he has such a phenomenal knowledge.
When the match between Dan Murrell vs. Paul Oyama comes to the public this week, I think this might be one of the greatest and deeply satisfying Schmoedown matches of all time. Both competitors will definitely get perfect rounds during the first round. Not just that, but this might be the very first singles title match where we probably will witness a Sudden Death (meaning both competitors being all tied up).
This means that if Oyama wins, he will have to face either Ben Bateman, Jeff Sneider, and Mike Kalinowski for the next singles championship title match.
However, if he does lose, Oyama will still be reckoned by many people as one of the Schmoedown’s greatest movie trivia connoisseurs ever and will be ranked with Ethan Erwin,
With that being said, this will definitely be prepared as a true match of the ages.
