Brace yourselves for impact for a new talent in the comedy game; Michael Angarano. He not only does a great job directing it but also acting and writing in the fantastic “Sacramento”. This really worked for me as an excellent indie comedy that not only covers loss but also covers the true meaning of a friendship. It’s arguably the funniest film I’ve seen since “The Banshees of Inisherin”.
Angarano’s film focuses on two friends. We have Glenn (Michael Cera), who lives a life with her pregnant wife Rosie (Kristen Stewart). Then we have Rickey (Michael Angarano), who chose to kick himself out of his psychiatric facility job. He also has toxic masculinity issues as well. Glenn unexpectedly gets harassed by Rickey to show off his old car he owned whiles back, which leads to an unexpected road trip to Sacramento.
Glenn starts to think that Rickey’s planned road trip might be pointless. He then suggests him to cancel the road trip altogether, but Rickey replies to Glenn that the reason why he planned this trip in the first place is because his father died. Funny enough, Rickey was there for Glenn for his own father’s death.
A lot of events ensue on this eventful road trip including Glenn and Rickey meeting a couple of girls.
This is seriously one of the best road-trip comedies I have seen in a very long time. Michael Angarano and Chris Smith’s script really does a great job delving into the awkward flaws of friendship while also being awkwardly funny at the same time. I can see where people are coming from when they say that Kristen Stewart’s ch
Like I said before, there is a lot of excellent comedy talent displayed in this film. Michael Cera delivers his most effortless performance on screen since “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World”. His comedic skills still have never left him with scenes when he talks nonchalantly to a baby and destroys a baby crib like a lunatic. Michael Angarano as Rickey is just as utterly hilarious as Cera. The way he delivers a line so dry like “Anger is sadness with nowhere to go” is just pure gold.
However, watch out for Maya Erskine as Tallie in this movie, whom she can go places. As seen in the trailer, the way she winks at Angarano’s Rickey is super funny.
(SPOILER) One flaw that really irked me was when Rickey eventually spread his father’s ashes in the river, Glenn was not there for him. I feel like he should have to be honest.
The fact that a company like Vertical financed this, yet Neon nor A24 can pick this up is very sad because this is a road trip comedy that reminds us of some of the best road trip comedies.
